Designing a Healthy Room for Your Toddler

Designing a room for your toddler is not an easy job. You need to consider various aspects, such as health, safety and, of course, the appropriate style. However, there is no need to be worried, since we’re here for you. Let’s take a look at some of our suggestions on how to design a healthy room for your child.

Pay attention to lighting and noise

Studies have shown that too much lighting and noise can have a negative impact on a child’s sensory development. UV light is particularly harmful to their eyes. For this reason, it’s best that you stick to indirect sunlight. This way, the room will be bright, leading to lower electricity bills and, at the same time, your child will be protected from harmful sunrays. When it comes to noise, keep the room quiet. Research has shown that a child’s hearing can be damaged by prolonged exposure to sounds above 80 dB. This means that putting a telephone in your child’s room is not the best idea, since its ringing is approximately at that level.

Limit the number of electrical appliances

Electrical appliances have been proven to generate electromagnetic fields that can be quite harmful, especially for a developing child. Although we’re aware that you can’t get rid of all of them, we strongly advise you to limit their number. So, even if there are cords and appliances in the room, put your child’s crib as far away from them as possible. The same advice applies to the baby monitor, which should under no circumstances be placed next to your child’s head.

Protect your child from allergies

If you want to protect your child from allergies and other respiratory issues, you should definitely buy the best air purifiers on the market, since they will filter the air in your child’s room, cleaning it from all the dust mites and particles which are the most common allergens in homes. Furthermore, it’s of the utmost importance that you choose the right materials for the room, because some of them can seriously endanger your child’s health. For example, you should avoid carpets made of synthetic materials, since they are usually full of mites, pesticides and allergens. Instead, stick to organic materials such as wool.

Leave enough space for your child to move around

If we’re to follow the Montessori education method and the belief that every child, from the moment of birth, has an enormous potential which needs to be allowed to develop freely, you’ll understand that leaving them enough space to move around is crucial. This way, your child will feel free to experiment and learn new things on their own. So, when designing the room, think about how to use less furniture instead of overcrowding the room with unnecessary pieces.

Design the dressing area properly

Another important aspect of a child’s development is freedom of choice. This helps them develop and mature faster, and what’s best, you can nurture their independence and freedom from an early age. For example, when designing a dressing area, do this in such a way that it’s easy for the child to see and fetch clothes on their own. Of course, in order to facilitate this choice, you should limit the number of possible options, since you don’t want to confuse them. All in all, keep their wardrobe simple and clean.

Respect your child’s interests

Finally, another important thing regarding your child’s healthy psychological development is that his or her interests should be respected. And, one of the easiest ways to show this respect is through the interior décor of their room. For example, if you notice that your son loves blue, paint one of the walls in this colour and place his favourite toys there. This way, you’ll show that you respect what he likes and help him create his personal corner, which he can further decorate the way he likes and thus express his creativity and imagination.

As you can see, with a good plan and some useful advice, this job doesn’t have to be so hard. It’s important that you consider what’s best for your child’s health and their development, both physical and psychological. Once you’ve done so, the rest is easy – follow their wishes and interests.
